Kristina and I had an amazing two days in Melbourne but what really gets me, is how open and willing people are to give their time and support.

There is overwhelming passion inside everyone, and while some are fortunate to have found a way to exhibit that passion in their everyday lives, others find opportunity to explore it when time affords. For those in the latter I encourage you to keep searching, we caught up with some of the [more] fortunate ones, their energy is contagious!

Cara works for a global retail
brand and while many people working in retail [I think it would be fair to say] see their work as merely a means to an end; an avenue to fund what they enjoy doing in their non-work time (now I’m not intending to pick out retail, as this syndrome is no doubt rife through any profession), there are certainly some exceptions, and Cara is one of them.

Imagine being told that your first objective should be to talk someone out of buying something - yeah right you say – to question your customer as to whether they really need the item. Next, once you’ve gotten over that hurdle, making sure that the item they buy is something they could be happy with for the rest of their life… I know what your thinking – sales must be down the gurgler.

Cara is a part of what we would like to see as a [much more common] new wave of business model. Cara feels inspired by the company she works for.

A term coined often by this team is ‘think globally to act locally’. Cara is very active in the community and is helping to build programs that enrich the lifestyles and environment of her town. Cara’s shop has moved beyond being merely a place to buy stuff, to being a place where people visit to talk about and connect with community.

I’d like to imagine a world where we all felt so connected to the people around us, and our individual roles in society. Then, perhaps we would understand what it means to be the happiest country in the world – connected and non-consumerist.

So it’s refreshing to come across organisations that model their business on happy people and a happy planet, and achieve such great success. For it is all too common that business sees their role as extracting the maximum value out of the resources they can get their hands on – standard economic theory, right?

Imagine measuring economic success not by growth in output, but by how well we are able to convert our resources into happy and sustainable living.

More about new economic measures and the worlds’ happiest country in my next post…

Cara works for patagonia, learn more about what they stand for at on their website: www.patagonia.com.au or visit their stores in Torquay, Sydney and soon to be Melbourne.

Today we head out for another exciting day of developments on the World By Cycle project and its days like this I feel I can relate to Richard Branson – though I wonder if the daily excitement may have become rather routine for such a man.

We’re headed for Melbourne, via Torquay (home of the famous ‘Bell’s Beach’), to kick off some meetings and interviews for the project.

First off we head for the Australian HQ of a global leader in sustainable and social business – Patagonia – to see if we can team up to tell their story as part of our documentary series. Then we’ll fly by Rapid Ascents John Jacoby to bleed his insight and views on the project.

This afternoon we head to Melbourne to catch up with some documentarians who

We look forward to sharing the journey!

Pre planning is starting to become a little more natural. And, really when it comes down to it, sometimes we just have to live without. Olive oil for instance, ran out a few weeks ago … and to get to a whole foods that sells bulk oil with a container is just that much more difficult then heading to any shop to buy a container … but, hey, we had an opportunity to learn how to make recipes differently.

Sometimes people are kind when I explain what we are doing. They are understanding and I think maybe, a spark of an idea is ignited … on Saturday coming home from our ride I finally convinced Nic to stop for a slurpie! What are you doing! The cashier exclaimed wagging his head at my bike water bottles full of slurpie, this is not BYO cup! You buy cup, not slurpie!!

Oh, well … and later that evening as I had been baking for hours to prepare our energy bars, Nic suggested Indian takeaway, sure we can do that – but we called and asked to bring in our own containers! Ah, why would you do that they asked me on the phone? And when I explained that takeaway containers could not be recycled and were wasteful they were so pleasant!

See, we are not totally changing our habits, just how we service our habits. Imagine a world where everyone felt comfortable to carry their own dishes if dinning out or grabbing take away! Connivence made kinder for our earth. xK

At present much of our time is occupied with our major program for 2012 – World By Cycle – building our bicycle import/distribution business, and maintaining some further mental stimulation in the management consulting space.

We are guilty of taking on every aspect of our business design, from brand creation through business development, administration and accounting – perhaps learning to farm off some of this activity would be a sensible move, but doing all allows us to really understand what’s going on in our space-es.

Bare with us – this site will be more active and informative in the weeks to come.
